Exciting August birding...

At the moment I am lucky enough to be dividing my time between living at home in Northumberland and living in my uni house down in Norwich.

This week I am back up north, and on Sunday I had the chance to catch up with some of the good birds on offer along the Northumberland coast. First up was the Pacific Golden Plover at Longhoughton Steel which gave some really good views just underneath the small cliffs. Much more confiding than the Holy Island bird of last year, we were able to really appreciate this smart bird throughout the time we spent on site.

Not only was the Plover showing well, there were also decent numbers of seabirds passing offshore. They included at least two juvenile Long-tailed Skuas and a second calendar-year Pomarine Skua, along with several Arctic and Great Skuas, three Sooty Shearwaters, plenty of Manx Shearwaters and a few Roseate Terns

Next we stopped at Druridge Bay Country Park, where the moulting adult White-winged Black Tern was performing well in the drizzle although rarely coming close to the shore.

Finally, the low water levels on the north pool at East Chevington is proving attractive to waders at the moment, with a smart juvenile Spotted Redshank being the best. The regular turn over of other juvenile waders has been good to see too.

Local catch up...

I've had a busy few weeks with lots of birding, a trip to North Ronaldsay and preparation for university. The birding has been decent around county so here are a few of my highlights...

Common Rosefinch on Holy Island - nice to finally connect with my county bogey bird!

Pomarine Skua - one of 11 which passed Newbiggin on 17th. It was a good seawatch and also included a good number of Sooty Shearwaters and a superb Leach's Petrel close inshore.

An exciting seawatch...

Yesterday we spent around seven hours at Church Point, Newbiggin. My target for the day was Pomarine Skuas and we sat through thunderstorms and hail without success. We did manage a nice selection of birds including a Little Auk, Red-necked Grebe and Sooty Shearwater, as well as 4 Scaup among large numbers of wildfowl. Birds in off included a Short-eared Owl and Woodcock.

Feeling a little bit frustrated about the lack of Poms, we decided to head back out this morning, and almost immediately we realised we were in for a better day. 3 superb Pomarine Skuas flew north inside the first ten minutes along with several Little Auks.

Over the next five hours or so, we had another 2 Pomarine Skuas including one superb adult very close in, and at 11:10 I picked up a Leach's Petrel going north about half way out. This was a lifer for me and a bird I've been wanting to see for a long time! Great stuff!

Here's some selected counts 07:15-11:40...

1 Leach's Petrel
5 Pomarine Skuas
37 Little Auk
24 Velvet Scoter
11 Manx Shearwater
1 Sooty Shearwater
6 Great Northern Diver
1 Black-throated Diver
25 Long-tailed Duck
1 Great Skua

Cory's close in...

I had just arrived home from a checkup at the dentist this afternoon when I checked my phone and saw that a Cory's Shearwater had been seen passing Whitburn. However the report was from ten minutes ago, so we wavered slightly before deciding to try Newbiggin anyway.

Within five minutes we were in the car and fifteen minutes later we arrived in the car park. Having been stopped by four of the five sets of traffic lights on the way, we were worried that we'd be too late...

After legging it from the car park to the point, we just had time to set our scopes up before the other birder already there called that he had the bird. At around just a couple of hundred metres range the Cory's Shearwater was close enough to be picked up with the naked eye and getting the scopes on it was easy!

We were treated to some really good views of the bird and were able to pick up all the key features such as the yellowish bill, upper and under part patterns, and the small pale patch on the uppertail as well as the overall grey colouration.

I tried taking a short video of the Shearwater which can be found below. While it is possible to see what it is from the video, it doesn't do the views justice, and it looked a lot better through the scope. At least taking it was a bit of practice for when the albatross decides to return to our part of the North Sea...

Also, in the seconds before the Cory's was called, I picked up an adult Pomarine Skua sat on the sea which had disappeared by the time the Shearwater had passed. It was a somewhat overshadowed by the Cory's and I even forgot to mention it in the original version of my post!

Video should be viewed in HD at 1080p

This weekend's birding

After great seabird counts on Friday we headed up to Snab Point for two and a half hours on Saturday afternoon. The highlight was ticking the commonest bird I hadn't seen; Pomarine Skua. One juvenile flew north close in with two Arctic Skuas. The totals were:

1 Pomarine Skua - north
145 Common Scoters
3 Teal
2 Manx Shearwaters
2 Brent Geese - north
4 Arctic Skua-all north
13 Great Skua
2 Velvet Scoter - north
1 Great Northern Diver - north

The weather forecast looked like it might bring down some migrants so this morning we went to Holy Island. There were a few birds moving, but we failed to spot anything rare. The highlights were a Great Grey Shrike which sat on a bush near the harbour for a few minutes and a couple of Mealy Redpolls which showed extremely well on the Crooked Lonnen. The full totals at Holy Islands were:

30+ Goldcrest
45+ Redwing
2 Woodcock
10+ Song Thrush
20+ Chiffchaff
2 Mistle Thrush
2 Fieldfare
6+ Great Spotted Woodpecker
2 Mealy Redpoll
4 Brambling
3 Siskin
1 Great Grey Shrike
2 Grey Plover
2 Black-tailed Godwit
